After the Battle

Before Endeavours Fade guidebook to the Western Front battlefields by the late Rose Coombs, MBE.

One of the most well-known publications by After the Battle is the excellent, highly recommended guidebook to the Western Front battlefields called “Before Endeavours Fade”. It was written by the late Rose E B Coombs who was a historian at the Imperial War Museum in the 1960s and 70s. She wrote this book in memory of her father who had served on the Western Front in the First World War. It was the first of the modern guidebooks to the battlefields, using the Michelin maps to show a route around the specific battlefield areas, complemented by descriptions and photographs of all the important monuments, cemeteries and battle sites. Since the first publication in the 1970s it has been revised and updated.
